Revv52 Presents a seasonal tribute to the roots of folk music

New York City is the unofficial home of American Folk Music. The heart of folk music was Greenwich Village and the heart of the heart was Washington Square Park.

During the 60’s, The Village became the mecca for folk music where musicians would get together at Greenwich Village’s Washington Square Park for weekly Sunday performances. The Village was the place where musicians lived and shared ideas, listened to music and created the newest sounds of the day.

Revv52 will present The Music of Greenwich Village in two sets of concerts in January and May 2011.

The January concerts will feature the music that put Greenwich Village on the world map. It’s the songs that were performed on the streets, in the coffee houses, at Washington Square Park and the establishments of the Village like The Bitter End, Café Au Go Go, Café Wha. These are the songs that created a buzz of interest for a new music written by some of the greatest songwriters of our time – Dylan, Pete Seeger, Joni Mitchell, the Weavers, Ian and Sylvia, The Kingston Trio, Peter Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor and countless others.

These artists honed their craft for songwriting while performing in the hybrid musical community of the Village. The environment of the Village was rooted in a vibrant arts community that supported the voice of folk music – the food, the merchants, and the energy on the streets. Revv52 will re-create this spirit by partnering with local establishments on 17th avenue near our performance home at the Grace.

The May concerts will explore the second generation of this music – the music that branched out from these Greenwich roots to affect the music scene on a larger scale. These artists matured as performers and songwriters – it plays out in their songs, songwriting and their performances.

The groups that were spawned from Village roots now affect a larger audience – in festivals, in major centres like San Francisco, in Canada through the early influences of Ian and Sylvia and Joni Mitchell, in major rock groups like the Byrds, The Lovin' Spoonful, The Fifth Dimension, Three Dog Night, the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, the Canadian Ballet, Gram Parsons, Stephen Stills, Buffalo Springfield, The Monkees, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby Stills Nash.

Joining Revv52 for both concerts are some of the finest musicians in Calgary, including guitarist Steve Pineo, bassist Kit Johnson, Revv52's own Trevor Waters on piano, and drummer/percussionist Nathan Giebelhaus. Revv52 is pleased to be working with Murray Ord, a veteran producer of two great movies filmed in Calgary, Legends of the Fall and Unforgiven.

January's concerts are on Friday and Saturday nights, January 28 & 29, 2011 starting at 8pm.  The show will also be played on Saturday February 5th, 2011 at 2pm at the Shell Theatre in Fort Saskatchewan. The May concerts are on Friday and Saturday nights, May 13th & 14th, 2011 starting at 8pm.  All Calgary shows are playing at The Grace, 1009 - 15th Avenue SW.  Tickets for all shows will be available through the Revv52 website approximately 8 weeks prior to the concert dates.
