Welcome to “Re-Imagine”
Thank you for joining us at Revv52’s annual gala performance, honouring the timeless music of The Beatles.
Galas are different than our mainstage shows in January and May. While those shows feature the entire Revv52 cast for the majority of the performance, our gala shows are special in that they predominantly showcase small groups of Revv52 cast members.
Every January, I announce the theme for the next season’s gala. Our singers are then invited to form small groups, choose a song that fits that theme, find or create an arrangement that works for them, and audition in front of the full cast before we break for summer. I’m left with the delightful task of choosing the songs that will make up the show in November.
Like many of you, I have fond memories of growing up listening to The Beatles. In some way, I feel The Beatles inspired me to pursue a music career. Not only were John, Paul, George, and Ringo each an excellent musician in their own right, but together, they encouraged each other to contribute ideas, develop songs, and create immersive albums. They experimented with chords, looking for interesting sounds and structures. They invented or improved many recording techniques, such as looping, artificial doubletracking, and recording voices through a rotating speaker. They incorporated the sounds of many different traditions, religions and cultures into their music, introducing these sounds to new audiences. But above all, their music and lifestyle influenced youth culture, and inspired young people to pursue music careers.
The challenge with basing an entire production around these iconic songs is exactly that — they’re iconic. So for tonight’s performance, I asked the group to re-imagine what these iconic songs could sound like. You’ll hear different tempos, genre bending, acapella versions, stripped down formats, mashups, and other new arrangements that explore the incredible music catalogue The Beatles gave to the world.
Thank you for supporting Revv52 through this important fundraising event. I’m looking forward to seeing you all in the audience at our next show.
